Management of Vegetation in Sahel
Land degradation in the face of vegetation degradation and desertification is a core problem for the living of humans and wildlife in Sahel. in Senegal we used NOAA AVHRR data for understanding human influences on land degradation processes and provide decision support for management of faunal reserves. Annual changes in bio-mass production identified boreholes, natural ponds and wadies under high pressure. Further a six yr. change analysis revealed a general drying of the area - which had wiped out selected tree species.
Resource pressure informations where linked to areas of biodiversity importance and careful management measures where made for sensible areas.
This ground-breaking approach has implication not only on a national scale but for most large scale areas under pressure form pastoralist.
